Indian tribes known as the Mohawk, Oneidas, Onondaga, Cayuga, and Seneca Tribes were the First Nations of the 1000 Islands region known as the "five nations" or the "League of Peace and Power". The bountiful harvest of the 1000 Islands led the Indians to call this magnificent place the "Manitonna" or Garden of the Great Spirit. The lived in longhouses, farmed the land, hunted in the forests and fished in the river in abundance with the generosity of the Great Spirit.

Our first nations people name Gananoque "A place of Health". To them Gananoque was a sacred place where they were known to retreat to heal their mind, body and spirit after the long Canadian winter. Gananoque is the heart of the spiritual energy of the 1000 Islands, and the magic of what draws visitors to the area year after year just as the first nation did.
