The Waterways

Explore...dream...discover

Explore Gananoque and the 1000 Islands, for this is the place of fascinating history, walking tours, biking, beautiful beaches and a captivating waterfront trail on the 1000 Islands Parkway. We are part of the UN designated 1000 Islands Frontenac Arch Biosphere Reserve, one of only 15 in Canada, and we are a conservationists dream.

THE WATERWAYS

THE THOUSAND ISLANDS

Extending 80 kilometres along the St. Lawrence River from Kingston to Brockville, Ont., these fascinating islands are actually the granite tops of an ancient mountain range that connected the Canadian Shield with the Adirondack Mountains of New York State. There are 1865 islands, the largest is several square kilometers and the smallest, just big enough for a tree.

The boundary agreement in 1793 between the U.S. and Canada decided that no island would be split in two, that the boundary should be 100 yards from any shore and if that was not possible, the line would run right down the middle between the two shores. This is why the boundary between the U.S. and Canada follows a zigzag line. Two thirds of the Islands are in Canadian territory but the total acreage of the Canadian and American Islands is roughly equal.

ST. LAWRENCE RIVER

The St. Lawrence River is one of the great rivers of the world, stretching for 1247 Kilometers, or 775 miles. The River starts where Lake Ontario empties and flows northeast to the Atlantic Ocean. It carries the fresh water of the Great Lakes to the Atlantic and provides shipping access to the heart of North America. Pink granite and limestone islands, large and tiny, for a distance of sixty miles, grace the upper St. Lawrence and are known to be the world famous 1000 Islands.

ST. LAWRENCE SEAWAY

The Great Lakes St. Lawrence Seaway System is a deep draft waterway extending 3,700 km (2,340 miles) from the Atlantic Ocean to the head of the Great Lakes, in the heart of North America. The St. Lawrence Seaway portion of the System extends from Montreal to mid-Lake Erie. Ranked as one of the outstanding engineering feats of the twentieth century, the St. Lawrence Seaway includes 13 Canadian and 2 U.S. locks for shipping. Almost 25 percent of its cargo travels to and from overseas ports, especially Europe, South America, the Middle East, and Africa.
