Our 1000 Islands Frontenac Arch Biosphere Reserve designation began with the "Biosphere Conference" organized by United Nations Education Scientific and Cultural Organization in 1968. UNESCO identified the need for both conservation and use of natural resources in the world's precious landscapes. Better known today for its sustainable development and earth friendly "green" efforts. The 1000 Islands Frontenac Arch Biosphere Reserve is recognized as one of only 15 such designations in Canada, and of 529 in the world.
This classification celebrates the global significance of our 1000 Islands in regional sustainable development and commands a responsibility for its safekeeping and conservation. Our forested lands, wetlands, waterways and immense granite formations from the Canadian Shield are marked as one of the most biologically diverse areas in the world. 2700 square kilometers in area, the Biosphere's exceptional ecosystem is comprised also of our unique cultures of the 1000 Islands and area and our initiatives for the education, conservation, culture and quality of life.
