Children’s Ice Fishing Derby

for children aged up to 12 years old. This event is intended to introduce children to the experience and fun of ice fishing.
Date: Saturday Feb.  18  2012     Time: 10 AM to 2:00 PM.
Place: Municipal Marina
Fishing coaches will be available. Fishing holes will be pre-drilled. Bait will be provided.
How to register: Registration and participation is free. Entry forms will be available at Redmond Realty Ltd. and the Gananoque Inn beginning 22 November 2011. Pre-registration is desired to plan for coaches, bait and equipment. However, same fishing day registrations will certainly be accepted. Please register before 7 January 2012 if possible.
Children under 10 years old must be accompanied by an adult.
Equipment: Preferably, parents should provide ice fishing rods, line, hooks etc. However, for children who do not have their own ice fishing equipment, this will be provided at no charge.
A foldable seat or chair or bucket is a good item to rest legs while fishing.
Parents may also like to bring a camera.
If your youngster wishes to take fish home for dinner, bring a plastic bag or bucket etc. (Perch and pike are legal catches in February).
Dress for cold weather and wind: It is best to dress in layers. Also warm head gear is essential: toques are especially desirable. And a hooded winter jacket, insulated pants and warm footwear are required. A hand warming station will be provided.
Age Categories: under 7 years old, 7 to 10 years, 10 to 12 Years old.
Weigh-in and measurement of fish will be conducted on the ice near the fishing hole if the youngster wishes to “catch and release”. Weigh-in will be at 2:00 PM.
Prizes will be presented and photos taken at the MNR trailer at Joel Stone Park at about 2:15 PM Saturday February 18.
More information will follow as plans develop for sponsorship, equipment, coaches, prizes etc.
